Namibia grants a six-month, non-renewable digital nomad visa to people working remotely for a company or clients outside Namibia who earn at least USD 2,000 a month from sources outside Namibia. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security gives approval, a holder may reapply only twelve months after expiry, and according to Prosperous Intelligence the Namibia passport, issued to citizens and not to holders of this visa, reaches 62 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance.
Programme overview
- Official programme name: Namibia Digital Nomad Visa
- Website: mhaiss.gov.na
- Regulator: Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security
Minimum capital threshold
The threshold is counted per person in the party, and the three levels are three fixed figures rather than percentages of the principal amount: the applicant USD 2,000 a month, an accompanying spouse USD 1,000 a month, and each accompanying child USD 500 a month.
Proof is a payslip or employment contract together with a six-month bank statement. Eligibility is tied to the source of income rather than to the occupation: the applicant must work remotely for companies or clients based outside Namibia, and must be a freelancer, a self-employed professional or a remote employee.
Beyond the money, the file requires valid international health and travel insurance, a valid passport, a medical certificate on form 3-1/0003, and a radiological report on form 31/0004.
It also requires an original or notarised or certified police clearance from the country of origin translated into English, a motivation letter from the employer, and copies of qualifications.
One procedural detail stands out: the file must include a motivation letter from the investment promotion board itself, and that letter is submitted directly by the Board to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security together with the application forms and supporting documents — the applicant never carries it
Legal outcome
What is issued is not a residence card but a loose entry visa: once payment is confirmed, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security issues a loose visa, and the authority states plainly that this is the official documentation for entry into Namibia.
The holder carries an entry document rather than a residence card in the ordinary sense.
The decision runs through two gates rather than one, and this is where the route is most often misread: the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board receives the application and is the address every introductory page points to, but it does not issue the visa.
It forwards the file to the Ministry together with a motivation letter of its own, and formal approval comes only from the Ministry.
The practical consequence for an applicant: acceptance of a file by the promotion board says nothing about the outcome, and the date from which every later step is counted — including when payment falls due — is the date of the Ministry’s approval, not the date the board received the papers.
Published processing time
The visa grants a six-month stay, and it is among the tightest on time in the whole digital nomad group, because three provisions close together. First, the visa is non-renewable.
Second, a person who has used their six months may reapply only twelve months after the date of expiry — a waiting period twice as long as the stay, so in practice the programme offers one third of each eighteen-month cycle.
Third, no change of condition is allowed on the visa, meaning there is no switching to another residence category from inside Namibia; the holder must leave and start afresh on a different route.
On cost, the fee of NAD 3,300 falls due only on formal approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, not at the point of filing, and the promotion board notes expressly that the figure excludes other expenses.
An accompanying dependant must also complete a separate application form 3-1/0033 rather than appearing on the principal form, and each accompanying person needs their own medical certificate and radiological report
Physical residence requirement
There is no minimum number of days of presence, but two provisions together block using this route as a stepping stone.
The first is the line on income: the holder must work remotely for companies or clients based outside Namibia and must earn USD 2,000 a month from outside Namibia — a condition stated on the same page under eligibility and again in the programme description, which makes it a condition of holding rather than merely of approval.
The second is the prohibition on change of condition: no change of condition is allowed on the digital nomad visa, so a holder who wants to work for an organisation in Namibia, or to move to another residence category, cannot do so from inside the country.
In return the permitted scope is described broadly: the visa allows the holder to work, live and travel in Namibia for the full six months.
On authority, the deciding body is the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security; the investment promotion board only receives the file and forwards it with its own motivation letter to the ministry, so formal approval does not come from the body that takes the application
Dependants admitted
The authority writes no separate passage on dependants; the scope sits in the structure of the documentation table itself, and that table has only three columns: applicant, spouse, child.
There is no column for parents, for an unregistered partner or for any other relative, so accompanying family under this route closes at a spouse and children.
Each accompanying person is a separate file rather than an extra line on the applicant’s form: a signed visa application form 3-1/0033 of their own, a medical certificate 3-1/0003 of their own, a radiological report 31/0004 of their own, a certified copy of their passport, and their own proof of medical or travel insurance.
The relationship document differs by column: a spouse files a marriage certificate, a child a full birth certificate. A motivation letter from the Investment Promotion Board is also required for each accompanying person and is likewise sent by that board directly to the Ministry.
Two things the authority does not publish, recorded so that no one fills them in by guesswork: there is no ceiling on the number of accompanying persons, and there is no separate fee stated for each of them.
Visa-free destinations
The status this programme grants, whether a visa or a residence permit, does not replace the holder's passport. The holder still travels on the passport of their own country, so the figure below belongs to the Namibia passport and becomes the holder's only once they are issued a Namibia passport.
According to the Passport Index of Prosperous Intelligence, on data dated 30 September 2026, the Namibia passport reaches 62 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance. The figure combines three forms of entry and does not count an e-Visa that must be obtained beforehand:
| Form of entry | Destinations |
|---|---|
| Visa-free | 44 |
| Visa on arrival | 15 |
| Electronic travel authorisation (eTA) | 3 |
| Total, the Passport Index figure | 62 |
| e-Visa obtained in advance, not counted | 51 |
It is therefore a measure of how easily the holder travels, not a count of visa-free countries in the narrow sense.
For comparison, on the same source and the same method of counting, the Vietnamese passport reaches 44 destinations. The two lists of destinations do not nest inside one another, so the difference is an indication rather than a list of places newly opened.
Prosperous Intelligence dates its data and advises checking with the destination’s official authorities before travelling.
Tax obligations arising
The first tier is silent on tax, the second tier has not been verified, and this record keeps those two apart. The programme page of the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board does not mention tax or residence.
That page does state a six-month visa that cannot be extended, that a fresh application may be filed only twelve months after expiry, that the conditions cannot be varied, that minimum income is USD 2,000 a month from sources outside Namibia, and that the fee is NAD 3,300.
The content of the ministry application portal, which is the programme primary source, has not been verified.
The Namibian tax residence rule has not been verified at the official source of the Namibia Revenue Agency, so this record does not state that Namibia does not tax holders of this visa.
One warning about sources belongs here: the Namibia Visa Fact Sheet, version 4 of 28 May 2025 published by the ministry itself, cannot be read reliably, because the file is a scan carrying a broken optical character recognition layer whose output is fragmented and misspelt, so finding no mention of tax in it proves nothing.
Mandatory costs beyond the investment
The fee is NAD 3,300, and the authority attaches a limiting clause to it at once: the figure excludes other expenses. On when it falls due, the published page says three different things, so recording all three is more honest than quietly picking one.
The fee table states that it is required upon approval. The programme description states that, once formal approval is given by the Ministry, the applicant must pay before arrival in Namibia.
The step-by-step guidance states that the NAD 3,300 will be required on arrival. What all three share is that the money goes to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, and that a local representative in Namibia may remit it to the Ministry on the applicant’s behalf.
One error in the source itself is worth flagging so that no reader miscalculates: the sentence describing the fee gives NAD 3,300 with a parenthetical of approximately NAD 195 — the two cannot both be right, and 195 is most likely a US dollar conversion with the currency label wrong.
Beyond the fee, three items in the mandatory file all cost money and appear in no fee schedule: the medical certificate, the radiological report, and the police clearance in original or notarised copy with an English translation — for each person travelling, not once for the party.
