By what mechanism does Grenada citizenship work?

Grenada citizenship is a programme that grants a passport in exchange for an economic contribution, received and approved by a specialized state committee of Grenada. The programme opens with two familiar routes: Non-refundable contribution to a national development fund, or investment in real estate in the approved project list, with a minimum asset holding period. Both routes allow dependents to be included in the same application.

The often mentioned attraction is that the programme does not require actual residence before naturalization and has a relatively quick processing time. The specific capital threshold and fee schedule are prescribed by law and adjusted over time, so they need to be checked directly at the management agency instead of relying on the project seller's marketing documents.

E-2 Treaty with the US: Advantages and new limits

What sets Grenada apart from the rest of the Caribbean programmes is the E-2 trade treaty between the country and the United States. Citizens of an E-2 treaty country may apply for an E-2 investment visa to operate a business in the United States.

This is a path that many investors are interested in as an intermediate step towards a presence in the US market, and is the main reason why the Grenada passport is valued higher than the regional average.

However, two things need to be clearly distinguished. First, the E-2 is a nonimmigrant visa, not a green card; it is tied to maintaining the investment and may require renewal.

Second, the E-2 conditions for investment-based naturalization have been tightened: Effective in 2026, new Grenada nationals must generally demonstrate physical residence in Grenada for a number of years before being eligible for E-2. E-2 benefits are therefore no longer as immediate as many older documents describe.

Because these conditions are set by the United States and may continue to change, current E-2 requirements need to be verified with official U.S. Department of State sources, with advice from a licensed immigration attorney, rather than taken from broker commitments.

Grenada passport benefits and freedom of travel

In addition to the E-2, the Grenada passport opens up many visa-free or visa-friendly destinations, including the UK, Schengen area and some Asian markets. For investors with extensive travel needs, this is part of the real value of the programme, in addition to the E-2 route.

It is important to note an often misunderstood limitation: Grenada passports do not provide visa-free tourist entry to the United States. Benefits related to the US lie in the E-2 route mentioned above, with its own conditions, not in visa exemption. The visa-free scope of any passport is the result of bilateral agreements and may change over time.

Risks and EU policy context

Grenada citizenship, like the other four Caribbean programmes, is under review pressure from the European Union. During 2025–2026, the European Commission stated that the operation of a citizenship-by-investment scheme could, in and of itself, be grounds for considering the suspension of visa-free access to the Schengen area. This is a policy risk that directly affects the travel value of the passport.

Since the value of Schengen visa exemption is currently subject to negotiation at the state level, current travel rights attached to a Grenada passport need to be treated as a variable, not a fixed basis for a long-term plan. The detailed developments were analysed in an article about five Caribbean citizenship programmes.

Due diligence before joining

Before participating, two questions need to be kept separate: Does the programme meet the applicant's goals, and if the real estate route is chosen, is the property worth buying at that price when the citizenship factor is set aside? Answering separately helps avoid paying a high price for an asset just because it is attached to the passport.

Due diligence steps should include: Verifying the programme is operated by a state agency, requesting an independent valuation of the real estate project, clarifying asset holding conditions and divestment potential, and verifying applicable E-2 requirements if that is the goal. Using lawyers and advisors separate from the project seller is a basic principle of caution, especially when the transaction takes place in an unfamiliar market.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grenadian citizenship give visa-free tourist entry to the United States?

It does not. The Grenadian passport opens many destinations but does not include visa-free tourist entry to the United States. The benefit connected with the United States lies in the ability to apply for the E-2 investor visa under its own conditions, not in visa exemption.

Does Grenadian citizenship make an E-2 application possible immediately?

No longer immediately, as it once did. Under US rules in force during 2026, a person newly naturalised in Grenada through investment must generally show a number of years of actual residence in Grenada before qualifying to apply for E-2. The current requirement needs to be verified with the US Department of State.

Is the Grenadian citizenship programme still operating?

It is. The programme continued to operate through 2026, administered by a state committee. It is nonetheless under review pressure from the European Union over Schengen visa-free access, so its conditions and benefits may change.
