Ecuador grants a two-year temporary residence visa, renewable once, to people working remotely for an employer, client or business abroad, with foreign-source income of at least three unified basic salaries a month for the three months before applying. The route rests on Article 60 of the Organic Law on Human Mobility, and according to Prosperous Intelligence the Ecuador passport, issued to citizens and not to holders of this visa, reaches 78 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance.
Programme overview
- Official programme name: Temporary residence visa for rentiers working remotely (Nomad Visa)
- Website: cancilleria.gob.ec
- Regulator: Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana
Minimum capital threshold
The threshold is set in multiples of a wage rather than as a dollar figure, and there are two ways to meet it. The first counts monthly: proof of income from a foreign source of at least three unified basic salaries per month over the three months immediately before the visa application.
The second counts annually: a total of thirty-six unified basic salaries for each year. Either way the proof is copies of international account statements showing that income.
Because the threshold is anchored to the Unified Basic Salary, the absolute dollar figure changes whenever that salary changes, so it must be read where the salary is fixed rather than copied from an older record.
Alongside the money condition sits a condition on where the money comes from: the applicant must show lawful means of subsistence under Ministerial Agreement No. 70 of 28 June 2024.
Documents must also show that the applicant works or provides services for a foreign employer, client or company domiciled abroad; someone who owns a company registered and domiciled abroad may equally apply on this route.
Legal outcome
What is granted is a temporary residence visa in the rentista category for remote work, and its legal footing is Article 60 of the Organic Law on Human Mobility 2023: temporary residence is the migratory status authorising a stay of two years in Ecuadorian territory, subject to renewal once and once only.
The validity section of the published page puts it briefly as up to two years.
The rentista category is defined by that same article more broadly than the ordinary sense of someone living on investment income:
It covers a person with own resources brought in from abroad, or living on the income those resources produce, or on any other lawful income from an external source, or indeed holding resources of Ecuadorian source.
As to where it is issued, the visa is granted in three places: the Zonal Directorates within Ecuador, the consular sections of Embassies, and Ecuadorian Consulates abroad.
Published processing time
The authority publishes no processing time, but it does publish a hard clock at the start of the file, and that clock is stricter than most processing deadlines.
Once the application is registered on the e-visas platform, the first payment must be made immediately. Any application not paid by 23:55 Ecuador time on the same day is automatically deleted by the system, and the applicant must then enter all the information again from scratch.
The two payment channels run on different hours, so choosing the wrong one costs the file: cash payment by deposit at Banco del Pacífico is accepted only within the bank's opening hours, 08:30 to 16:00, while credit or debit card payment can be made until 23:55 on the same day.
The platform itself is open 24 hours a day, but the platform's hours are not the payment hours. Once payment is made, the application is formally created and moves to the status review of information. The validity of what is issued on completion is up to two years.
Physical residence requirement
This route imposes no duty to count days of presence; its residence conditions sit in three other places. The first is the time frame under Article 60 of the Organic Law on Human Mobility: temporary residence authorises a stay of two years, renewable once and once only.
The second is a condition on migratory status at the moment of applying, and this is where files from people already in the country come unstuck: a foreigner who is on Ecuadorian territory when applying must prove their stay is regular, by a tourist stay authorisation issued by the Ministry of the Interior or by a visa still in force.
The third is health insurance, and its requirement carries a limb few places impose: the applicant must hold national or foreign health insurance valid for the same period as the visa, and where the cover is contracted with a foreign company, the policy or the contract must state that it covers Ecuador.
A global policy which does not name Ecuador does not satisfy the condition.
Dependants admitted
The published page sets out no list of eligible family categories, and imposes no age limit or relationship condition.
What it imposes is a test in money, applied person by person: for the holder of this category to sponsor another person, they must show additional monthly income of two hundred and fifty US dollars for each person sponsored.
Framing the condition that way has two consequences worth seeing in advance.
First, because there is no list of categories, the scope of who may be sponsored rests with the authority rather than with a closed provision, so it must be asked about rather than inferred from other programmes.
Second, because the 250 dollars is an absolute figure while the principal's own threshold is a multiple of the Unified basic salary, the two halves of the same file move at different speeds: the principal's half rises with every wage adjustment, the sponsored person's half stands still.
One procedural point: an application for a minor must be made by their legal representative or an authorised agent.
Visa-free destinations
The status this programme grants, whether a visa or a residence permit, does not replace the holder's passport. The holder still travels on the passport of their own country, so the figure below belongs to the Ecuador passport and becomes the holder's only once they are issued a Ecuador passport.
According to the Passport Index of Prosperous Intelligence, on data dated 30 September 2026, the Ecuador passport reaches 78 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance. The figure combines three forms of entry and does not count an e-Visa that must be obtained beforehand:
| Form of entry | Destinations |
|---|---|
| Visa-free | 50 |
| Visa on arrival | 22 |
| Electronic travel authorisation (eTA) | 6 |
| Total, the Passport Index figure | 78 |
| e-Visa obtained in advance, not counted | 55 |
It is therefore a measure of how easily the holder travels, not a count of visa-free countries in the narrow sense.
For comparison, on the same source and the same method of counting, the Vietnamese passport reaches 44 destinations. The two lists of destinations do not nest inside one another, so the difference is an indication rather than a list of places newly opened.
Prosperous Intelligence dates its data and advises checking with the destination’s official authorities before travelling.
Tax obligations arising
The programme establishes no tax regime, and that is a measurement taken on the published page rather than an impression.
The legal basis the page itself lists runs to four instruments, and not one of the four is a tax instrument.
They are the Consular and Diplomatic Tariff 2023 (Ministerial Agreement No. 0000026), Article 60 of the Organic Law on Human Mobility 2023, the rules implementing the digital services management model, and Article 64 of the Regulation to the Organic Law on Human Mobility 2023.
The word tax appears exactly once on the whole page, and it speaks about the fee rather than about the taxpayer: the fee for the procedure is not subject to value added tax.
The consequence for anyone planning is that the holder's tax position must be read in another body of sources, at the domestic revenue authority, not at the visa-issuing authority — and the programme's silence on tax does not mean the holder incurs no tax obligation in Ecuador.
Mandatory costs beyond the investment
The state fee splits into two charges payable at two different moments, and merging them into a single figure is a reliable way to misread when what falls due: the visa application at 50 US dollars, and the grant of the visa at 270 US dollars.
The first is the charge that must be paid on the same day the application is filed, failing which the file is deleted; the second falls at the grant stage. Neither is subject to value added tax.
The tariff also carries two reliefs that few summaries reproduce: A 50% reduction for people aged 65 and over, applied nationwide; and a 100% exemption for people with a disability of 30% or more, likewise nationwide, on production of the disability card issued by Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health.
As to channel, the procedure can be carried out online only, through the e-visas platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility; there is no in-person route. The tariff rests on Ministerial Agreement No. 0000026 on the Consular and Diplomatic Tariff 2023.
