Barbados issues the Barbados Welcome Stamp, a twelve-month permission to stay for remote workers, on annual income of BDS 100,000 or more generated outside Barbados and valid health insurance. The programme operates under the Remote Employment Act, 2020, sets no minimum number of days of presence and typically approves applications within 7 business days, and according to Prosperous Intelligence the Barbados passport, issued to citizens rather than to holders of this stamp, reaches 168 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance.

Minimum capital threshold
The Remote Employment Act, 2020 sets the conditions at section 3: a valid passport; proof of annual income of BDS 100,000 or more and that the income is generated outside Barbados; and valid health insurance for the period for which the Stamp is granted.
The official programme site states the same figure in US dollars as USD 50,000 for the twelve months of intended stay. The two do not conflict: the Barbados dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at USD 1 = BDS 2 since 1975, so BDS 100,000 is exactly USD 50,000, and the two figures state the same threshold in two currencies.
The file also needs a passport-sized photograph and the passport bio-data page for the principal applicant and every member of the family group over 18, together with proof of relationship
Legal outcome
The outcome is a twelve-month permission to stay, and what is unusual about this record is that the authority has published real figures on who does not get it — something most routes in this group never do.
Over the period from 18 July to 22 August, immediately after the Remote Employment Act 2020 was passed, the Ministry of Home Affairs processed 1,079 applications: 764 individual applications and 315 family bundles, meaning roughly 29 per cent of applicants came as households.
Sixty applications were refused, about 5.6 per cent, and the authority names two grounds: the applicant was seeking employment in Barbados, and or adverse reports had been received from the Joint Regional Communication Centre.
The Minister also stated plainly that anyone considered a threat to national security would be excluded from the programme. Read together, those two grounds show where the filter actually sits: not on the level of income but on the source of the work and on character.
As to context, the authority describes the purpose of the programme as filling the gap left by the fall in tourist arrivals during the COVID-19 pandemic and generating foreign exchange, while adding that although the permission runs for a year, the government hopes to keep for longer those who would contribute to national development.
One limit should be recorded so the figures are not overread: these are numbers from the programme’s opening period and are the only set published, so nothing can be inferred about the rate today.
Published processing time
The authority publishes a single timing figure, and it is a figure for approval rather than for issue: applications are typically approved within 7 business days. The fee falls due only after approval, and it must be paid within 28 days of the application being approved. The fee is non-refundable in all cases.
The word typically in the seven-day figure is the authority's own, so it is a usual timeframe rather than a commitment. The whole process runs online, and once it is complete applicants are directed to contact the programme manager.
Before flying, travellers to Barbados must complete an online customs and immigration form. The programme site, read on 27 September 2026, states that the online form is facing technical issues and directs arrivals to the immigration kiosks at the airport.
Physical residence requirement
Section 5(1) of the Act allows a Stamp to be granted for a period of 12 months only, and the official site says a holder may reapply once it expires.
The Act sets no minimum number of days of presence in Barbados. What it does set is a limit on work: section 7 bars the holder from engaging in any employment in Barbados other than the employment for which the Stamp was granted.
Section 8 lets the Minister revoke the Stamp of a holder who contravenes or fails to comply with the Act, and section 9 requires the Chief Immigration Officer to keep a register of everyone issued with one
Dependants admitted
The route admits whole families as a bundle, but the published page does not define which categories of relative may be included. What it sets out is paperwork, and the paperwork shows who is counted.
A family file needs photographs of the principal applicant and every member aged 18 or over, the passport bio data page of each member, and proof of the relationship between the principal applicant and each person. The price of the family bundle is recorded in the cost cell of this page.
School-aged children approved under the programme do not need a separate student visa. When the Immigration Department issues the visa to the family, a copy is placed in the child's passport, and that copy allows the parents to begin school enrolment.
Education in Barbados is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 16. Non-national children may attend a private school, or a state school on payment of a small stipend; parents may also homeschool.
Places in state schools are limited. There is currently no space in public special schools, and several public secondary schools have limited availability; the Ministry of Education allocates by space and informs parents within 5 days.
Visa-free destinations
The status this programme grants, whether a visa or a residence permit, does not replace the holder's passport. The holder still travels on the passport of their own country, so the figure below belongs to the Barbados passport and becomes the holder's only once they are issued a Barbados passport.
According to the Passport Index of Prosperous Intelligence, on data dated 30 September 2026, the Barbados passport reaches 168 destinations without applying for a consular visa in advance. The figure combines three forms of entry and does not count an e-Visa that must be obtained beforehand:
| Form of entry | Destinations |
|---|---|
| Visa-free | 140 |
| Visa on arrival | 22 |
| Electronic travel authorisation (eTA) | 6 |
| Total, the Passport Index figure | 168 |
| e-Visa obtained in advance, not counted | 47 |
It is therefore a measure of how easily the holder travels, not a count of visa-free countries in the narrow sense.
For comparison, on the same source and the same method of counting, the Vietnamese passport reaches 44 destinations. The two lists of destinations do not nest inside one another, so the difference is an indication rather than a list of places newly opened.
Prosperous Intelligence dates its data and advises checking with the destination’s official authorities before travelling.
Tax obligations arising
The Act does not grant an exemption in the form of an exemption clause; it works by two changes of definition inside the Income Tax Act, Cap. 73, and the two bite in different places.
Section 4 deems a Stamp holder not to be resident in Barbados for the purposes of section 85(5) of the Income Tax Act. Section 6 provides that, for the purposes of section 16 of the Income Tax Act, income derived from Barbados shall not include income received by a Stamp holder.
The Objects and Reasons of the bill say the same thing: the Act is there so that non-nationals working remotely from Barbados for twelve months are deemed not resident for income tax purposes. This is immigration legislation amending tax legislation, not a ruling of the Barbados tax authority
Mandatory costs beyond the investment
The fee schedule has exactly two levels, in US dollars, and both are flat:
| Application | Flat fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| Individual | 2,000 |
| Family bundle | 3,000 |
The most striking feature of this design is that it is not calculated per head anywhere. A household of two and a household of six pay the same USD 3,000, so the marginal cost of a third member, a fourth and every one after that is zero.
The same logic repeats on the income side: the requirement is an annual income of at least USD 50,000 over the twelve months of intended stay, and that figure likewise does not rise with the size of the family group — unlike most routes in this group, which add an amount for each accompanying person.
For a large household this is one of the lightest cost structures in the whole digital nomad set.
The second point concerns the order of payment, and it changes the applicant’s risk outright: the fee falls due only after the application has been approved, so an applicant who is refused loses nothing — the opposite of routes that charge a non-refundable assessment fee up front, where the money is gone before the outcome is known.
On documents that carry a cost, the file requires the passport bio data page of the principal applicant and of every member of the family group over eighteen, together with proof of the principal applicant’s relationship to each of the others.
